A team of three Nigerian researchers has developed two technological solutions aimed at ensuring the authenticity and reliability of scholarly works and resources throughout global higher education institutions.
The trio consisting of James Duru, Moses Adebayo, and Damilare Ogunleye stated that they developed the applications known as AI Guard and Cite Guard to tackle the increasing global worries about the authenticity of academic content due to the rise of AI-powered tools.
As per a joint declaration made by the three individuals, these tools were created with the aim of addressing gaps within academic settings, particularly focusing on enhancing authenticity and ensuring correct citation practices in universities and colleges.
Although recognizing the beneficial effects of introducing AI into academia, they contended that these new technologies would guarantee that student work and research remains original and free from plagiarism.
The statement says, “Even though AI-driven apps offer substantial advantages in academia, especially for research purposes, students who aren’t careful might use these AI-enabled tools to handle their research tasks. This situation poses considerable difficulties for educators when it comes to properly attributing sources in assignments submitted by students.”

We are launching the AI Guard Application, an application aimed at tackling increasing worries about academic honesty, notably concerning AI-facilitated dishonesty and managing citations for research.
As educational organizations confront growing issues caused by sophisticated AI tools that enable misconduct among students, there is an urgent requirement for efficient strategies to preserve the authenticity of scholarly endeavors.
Considering the usability of both technological solutions, the report stated that “AI Guard operates as an offline all-inclusive tool intended to enable users to modify, structure, and transform text documents into multiple image formats. It facilitates the import and export of textual content across various document types like `.docx` and `.pdf`. Additionally, it offers extensive formatting capabilities along with functionalities for embedding and adjusting images within texts. This approach aims at motivating faculty members to upload assessment materials—such as test papers and exam queries—in a lower resolution yet clearly legible image format onto their respective educational platforms. Consequently, this strategy should prevent learners from effectively utilizing AI optical character recognition (OCR) software to accurately retrieve these questions and subsequently search for responses through alternative AI systems or tutoring resources.”
The Cite Guard is an offline application created to assist users in effectively verifying citations within academic and research papers. This tool streamlines the detection of absent or improperly cited sources according to widely used citation formats such as APA, Chicago, and Harvard. Users can import their documents into the app, which then examines the content for accurate citations before producing detailed reports highlighting any missed or incorrectly referenced materials.
They added, “The programs Cite Guard and AI Guard represent a forward-thinking approach to addressing growing concerns about academic honesty in the age of artificial intelligence. These tools offer a comprehensive solution for verifying the authenticity of student work by focusing on proper citation management as well as preventing AI-facilitated cheating.”
AI Guard and Cite Guard are essential instruments for maintaining the utmost levels of academic honesty in today’s educational landscape. Ultimately, these tools will enhance the credibility of scholarly achievements by allowing educators to tackle AI abuse effectively, fostering an environment conducive to ethical exploration and learning. At such a critical juncture, these resources will set benchmark practices for upholding academic integrity.
