India Adds Nearly 30 GW of Solar and Wind Power in Fiscal Year 2025

Photovoltaic capacity saw an increase of more than 50% compared to the previous year.

India keeps growing its renewable energy sector by adding almost 30,000 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power during the fiscal year (FY) 2025, spanning from April 2024 to March 2025.

As reported by JMK Research & Analytics, there was a significant rise of 58.5%, bringing solar installations up to 23,832 MW, along with an increase of 27.9% reaching 4,151 MW for wind power projects compared to the prior year figures.

“This notable increase in solar installation capacity may be attributed to the robust growth of the green open-access market, fueled by corporate efforts towards reducing carbon emissions, along with a decrease in module costs during the latter part of FY2024,” the firm stated.

The installed solar power consists of 16.9 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale capacity along with 1,785 MW of off-grid and distributed solar installations.

In the case of wind energy, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat were responsible for 82% of India’s installed wind capacity.

Data from India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy indicated that the nation’s
installed renewable energy
reached 220 GW by the end of fiscal year 2025. Solar made up 48% of this total capacity, with wind energy contributing 23%, large hydro providing 22%, biopower accounting for 5%, and small hydro representing 2%.
