FG Launches Construction of 65km Dual Carriageway on Coastal Highway in Cross River

On Monday, the Federal Government initiated the construction of a 65km triple-lane divided roadway via the Ministry of Works. This development is a segment of the broader 750km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

Sections 3A and 3B, located within Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, will be constructed utilizing Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavements as per contract number 8784.

The coastal highway is designed to link Lagos with Cross River, passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states prior to arriving at its ultimate endpoint in Cross River.

The aim is for this location to become a hub for economic activity within the area. This new route will improve connections between multiple communities in Cross River State such as Awi, Njahasang, Oduyama, Ikot Okon Akiba, Obot Ekpo, Afan Okoyong, Ekemkpon, Mkpara Otop, Kaifa, Nduoduo, Oboroko, Esuk Ekom, Nkita, and Ekong Atan Oku, eventually connecting with the Calabar River Bridge leading into Akwa Ibom State.

At the commencement ceremony, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented by Cross River State Governor Senator Bassey Otu, who referred to the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project as a key driver of economic expansion, employment opportunities, cross-regional cohesion, and cultural interaction.

“The responsibility of our forward-thinking administration is to create conditions that facilitate the growth of nano, small, and medium-sized businesses. The relevant departments are prepared to offer soft loans, grants, expert advice, and various incentives to aid these enterprises in their operational endeavors,” he stated.

He stated, “In the coming years, Nigeria will attain complete autonomy. Failing to ensure food security and self-determination may leave us vulnerable to reliance on stronger economies. Nonetheless, the programs we’re currently undertaking will create a substantial heritage designed to enhance the well-being of Nigerians.”

The minister praised President Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructure development, calling him a national hero.

He commented on taking over an economy facing challenges but showed confidence in overcoming them, saying, “We have survived the toughest times and are moving toward greater wealth, with this initiative being a crucial step in our progress.”

The minister encouraged nearby neighborhoods to work together with the contractor, Hi-Tech Construction Ltd, to guarantee the project finishes on schedule.

Engineer Olayinka Onafuye, who serves as the Federal Controller ofWorks in Cross River State, reaffirmed his dedication to overseeing Section 3A of the roadway. He emphasized that this section will adhere strictly to the guidelines set forth by the Federal Ministry of Works.

“I am accountable for ensuring that the project meets all specified requirements. I will collaborate closely with the contractors as well as the two local host communities of Akamkpa and Odukpani LGA to make sure that the road is finished to a high standard,” he said.
