China’s BYD Unveils a Budget EV with Impressive Range

Chinese automaker BYD is once again making waves in the industry with the introduction of its latest model, the e7 electric sedan. Designed to be a budget-friendly alternative to its upscale Seal series, the e7 promises a winning combination of mileage, functionality, and cost. Priced at roughly 18 million KRW ($14,000), this new offering comes in significantly cheaper than the Seal—almost halving its price point—and manages to provide an impressive travel distance of up to 520 kilometers (323 miles) per full charge.

The E7: An Innovative Electric Sedan

The BYD e7 is a mid-sized electric car that strikes a balance between functionality and cost-effectiveness.

The car measures 4,780 millimeters in length, 1,900 millimeters in width, and stands at 1,515 millimeters tall. These measurements are quite similar to those of the Seal model, particularly with respect to its 2,820 mm wheelbase.

One prominent characteristic is its kerb weight, offered in two versions: 1,499 kg (3,305 lbs) and 1,566 kg (3,452 lbs). This aids in enhancing both the range and cost-effectiveness.

The outside design boasts a streamlined, aerodynamic shape. To maintain affordability though, the e7 includes standard door handles and 16-inch wheels, prioritizing practicality over opulence.

323-Mile Range with Blade Battery Technology

The BYD e7 comes with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery choices: one at 48 kWh and another at 57.6 kWh. According to the CLTC standards, they offer an approximate range of 450 kilometers (280 miles) and 520 kilometers (323 miles). These distances should be adequate for regular city driving as well as trips covering more ground.

The car features one 100 kW (134 hp) electric engine and can go as fast as 150 km/h (93 mph), which makes it quite competitive within its class.

A significant attraction is BYD’s Blade Battery technology, renowned for its robustness and safety features, enhancing the car’s desirability.

Aim for Fleets: Taxi and Ride-Sharing Programs

It appears BYD is focusing on the taxi and ridesharing sectors with the e7, building upon the commercial success of its precursor, the e5.

A market researcher observed that with increasing price competitiveness among electric vehicles in China, BYD presents a budget-friendly and pragmatic option for commercial fleets. At around $13,500 per vehicle, this pricing might attract attention from overseas buyers as well.

The e7 is anticipated to be a pivotal moment in the electric vehicle sector. Featuring an outstanding driving distance, reliable operation, and competitive pricing, BYD’s newest offering isn’t merely viewed as another addition to their lineup; rather, it signals a significant redirection within the worldwide EV marketplace.
